Social Welfare Policy and Services
Attached you will find two papers that I wrote in SW 4710, the first being an evaluation of current policy related to Mental Health Parity. I have a strong passion for seeking a better understanding of healthcare, specifically mental health care. I have personally experienced the healthcare system fail people who desperate need services and treatment merely because their mental health diagnosis was "not covered" by their insurances or they were simply looked over because those patients with physical ailments are considered priority over those with mental health issues. Through researching for this paper I gained a clearer understanding of the policy that exists to preserve the rights of the mentally ill but also was disturbed by the lack of support and structure to this area of health care. Mental health parity states that mental illnesses be treated just as physical illnesses but these laws are very lax and vary from state to state depending on whether the law is at the state or federal level. Overall I think that this paper was a clear reflection of my interest and passion regarding mental illness and shows impeccable research based analytical writing skills.
The second paper was a follow up to the previous allowing me to form my own policies regarding mental health and make changes where necessary after researching parity laws and policies already in existence. This paper takes a look at a possible policy alternative to the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 that will explore a new policy that will resolve the limitations and issues associated with the original policy. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 serves as beneficial to many throughout the United States but limitations at the state and federal levels prevent many others in need from receiving treatment. The new policy proposed; the Mental Health Inclusion Act will look at possible solutions to these problems by assessing the issues related to the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. This paper allowed me to hone my research skills and become more confident in the steps of policy making.
